Gig Poster Project- Fractal, Beautiful Mess

The goal of this project was to create a gig poster for a music group (real or made-up) from a collage of found objects.
When I first started planning this project, I had no idea what kind of group I would go with, or what kind of collage I could do. In most of my projects, I start off with a sketch and transfer it to the computer to create the final image. I also paint or use markers for my more personal artworks. Collage isn't really a medium I'm familiar with.
The first step was actually choosing a genre and coming up with a group. Some genres I was considering were electropop, folk, indie, synthwave, even funk and ska. Eventually, after a lot of thought, I was able to narrow down my selection to electropop and folk.
To help me get a better feel for each of these genres and a better idea of how I would even make a collage for them, I made a mind map.
Here, you can clearly see which genre I like better, and which I had more inspiration for!
Next came the thumbnails, which I used to explore as many different options as I could for potential compositions, possible materials I could use, and even a handful of gig names that might work for the final poster. Lindsey Stirling is one of my favorite musicians, so I was loosely inspired by the styles I've seen in some of her album covers.
The thumbnail I like the best was #12, Beautiful Mess. I felt that one had the best potential for an interesting collage.
Next came the fun part of sourcing all the materials for the collage. I already knew that I was going to be using some construction paper and magazine clippings for it. Then, a great opportunity came up. My mom was going through her closet and came across some laptops she wanted to get rid of. I had the privilege of helping destroy them! After the laptops were demolished, I scavenged some pieces to use for my poster.
The final layout of the poster, post gluing...
Final list of materials used:
-construction paper
-magazine clippings
-shiny foil from a fancy chocolate box
-computer keys
-CPU from a laptop
-hard drives from a laptop
- and other miscellaneous computer parts
After the collage dried, I took a picture of it and sent it to my computer. From there, I used Photoshop to add a picture of a violinist, correct the color in the picture, and in general, make it look more cohesive. Then I added text to it in Illustrator using the type along a path tool.
Final gig poster for up and rising electropop group, Fractal!
Disclaimer: Fractal is not a real group.
I'm really proud of the way this turned out! There's something really incredible about seeing something you put so much work and effort into come to life.
That being said, the biggest thing I would change about this is the lighting and the clarity of the photo. I don't exactly know how I would go about fixing these. My house has terrible lighting that has a yellowish tint, and I couldn't figure out how to get rid of it in post-processing. The clarity in the photo isn't the best because my phone camera quality isn't that great. It makes it to where you can't really see the details in the poster.
Anyway, thank you so much for reading my ramblings and for viewing!
